More Alike Than Different – Or Not

RAN 1st day 4thIt sounds right when you first say it…”more alike than different.”  People with Down Syndrome are more like you and me than they are different than you and me. OK. I don’t necessarily disagree.  But I don’t buy it either.

“More alike than different” is a well intentioned message, but it still implies people with Down Syndrome are different.  It says that those of us with the right number of chromosomes are the ones to be compared to.

We are all more alike than different.  But we are all different.  No two people are exactly the same.  So why should someone with an extra 21st chromosome be any different?
